Anthropic's "safer" Claude 2 Artificial Intelligence is here now

Updated 10 months ago on July 13, 2023

The public can now purchase Claude 2 AI, a ChatGPT competitor from Anthropic. The company claims that it is superior to its predecessor in many ways, from which users will only benefit. But the main question we have to ask is, "Is it good enough to take the ChatGPT throne?".

Daniela and Dario Amodei, two former senior members of the OpenAI team, have founded Anthropic. According to the startup's website, its goal is to make generative AI safe and "manageable," with a focus on ethics. Notably, news of Google's investment in the AI business surfaced in February. The second iteration of Claude, which was previously only available to businesses, is a large language model.

The successor to Anthropic's original commercial model, Claude 2 AI, is now available in beta in the US and UK via a paid API (with limited access) and online. The cost of the API is unchanged (around $0.0465 per 1,000 word creation) and Claude 2 is already being tested by a number of companies including Sourcegraph and generative AI platform Jasper.

Claude was originally released in March by Anthropic, a Google-backed company, but organizations could only access it on-demand or through the Slack app. Anthropic is expanding the capabilities of the Claude 2 chatbot with a number of changes. Claude 2 is slightly better at math, coding, and reasoning than the original Claude model, and is also capable of constructing longer responses.

What is Claude 2 AI?

Claude 2 AI is a second-generation artificial intelligence tool developed by Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI employees. Claude is intended to be more "secure" than other existing artificial intelligence tools.

Claude 2 is reportedly a powerful AI capable of processing up to 100,000 tokens, which is roughly equivalent to 75,000 words in a single query. This is significantly more than Claude's previous figure of 9,000 tokens, which gives it a particular advantage: the AI will now be able to respond in a better and more contextual way.

Anthropic claims that Claude 2's behavior is easier to understand and easier to modify when needed compared to other models due to constitutional AI. However, the company admits that there are other methods of learning other than constitutional AI.

According to Anthropic, many of the principles of Claude 2 were established by "trial and error" and numerous adjustments had to be made to ensure that the models were not too "estimable" or "annoying".

However, unlike Bard and Bing, Claude 2 is not yet online and is trained on data as of December 2022. While this prevents it from providing the most up-to-date information on current events, its dataset is still more recent than the one used in the free version of ChatGPT. ChatGPT has been trained until 2021.

Claude's context window has also just been boosted by Anthropic to about 75,000 words. The bot can parse dozens of pages or even an entire novel if you upload them to it.

Therefore, Claude is your bot if you need a brief overview of a complex and lengthy academic paper. Unlike other models, ChatGPT has a maximum word count of around 3,000 words. I can't wait to try Anthropic now that it's open to the general public and see if a wider context window, as we saw with Bing, can take out this "harmless" bot.

Price

Fortunately, Claude 2 AI is completely free, and you don't have to pay a dime to take advantage of its features, technology, and innovations. This is probably one of the best reasons for thousands of users.

However, you can also try the Claude 2 AI API, which costs ~$0.0465 for generating 1000 words.

Accessibility

Claude 2 is currently only available for users in the US and UK. If you live in another country, you will have to wait to try out the latest AI content generator.

Some people use VPN services to try new technologies that only launch in Western countries. Many people use this option in situations like this, but if you wait a little longer, you won't have to face the problems associated with VPNs, as they are likely to appear in your country as well.

How to use Claude 2 AI

Visit the Claude 2 page on the Anthropic website to sign up for free if you are in the US or UK. When you simply click the "Talk to Claude" button, you will be prompted for your email address. After verifying the address entered, you'll be ready to go.

Claude 1.3 vs. Claude 2 AI

Like the original Claude (Claude 1.3), Claude 2 is capable of searching the entire document, producing summaries, writing and coding, and conducting Q&A sessions on specific topics. Anthropic claims that Claude 2 is superior in a number of ways.

For example, Claude 2 does marginally better than Claude 1.3 on the multiple-choice portion of the bar exam (76.5% vs. 73.3%). He is also a better coder than Claude 1.3, scoring 71.2% on the Codex Human Level Python coding test.

Claude 2 is also 2.8 percentage points better than Claude 1.3 in math, correctly answering 88% of the grade level questions on the GSM8K compendium. Claude 2's AI is also twice as good as Claude 1, "giving innocuous answers," according to Anthropic. Thus, compared to the previous model, it should be less likely to "spit out" dangerous substances when interacting with it, though Anthropic doesn't completely rule out the possibility of a jailbreak.

ChatGPT v. Claude 2 AI

Claude handles large amounts of data, but may not be the best choice for tasks requiring real-time data. ChatGPT is more creative, which is ideal for tasks requiring specific language support.

Claude 2's test results are equivalent to, though slightly lower than, the GPT-4 on which the flagship version of ChatGPT runs. However, Anthropic aims to distinguish itself from OpenAI by offering a more moral and responsible replacement.

"We conduct an internal evaluation in which our models are evaluated on a large representative set of harmful messages using an automated test, as well as regularly checking the results manually," Anthropic said in a statement.

The Claude 2 AI is proven to be better than its predecessor, but ChatGPT will probably still be preferred by a huge number of users, as despite some of the advantages of Claude 2, it still doesn't have the full set of features to dethrone the king. It looks like it won't be easy for other companies to topple GPT's reign either, as even former OpenAI employees can't come close.

On the other hand, you shouldn't have to choose between ChatGPT, Claude 2 AI, Google Bard or Microsoft Bing. Each tool has its own benefits and features that set it apart from the others. If you want to get more value from artificial intelligence tools, use them all according to your needs and preferences.
